K-12 performance tasks in

Students take on the role of a doctor or genetic counselor. Students are given a karyotype to identify chromosomal disorders in utero. Students research any abnormalities found. Students then write letters to inform fictional parents of their findings for their unborn son or daughter. The letter should explain what a karyotype is, the difference between a normal and abnormal karyotype, and what disease has been diagnosed. A successful result will be an accurately arranged karyotype and a proper diagnosis of the genetic disorder of the karyotype.

Students design a book, comic book, or video. The product must tell a story in which all the characters create an analogy to show how the organelles of a cell work together (what their jobs or functions are). The book must include visuals and a full description of each organelle. The plot of the story should show the student's understanding of how each organelle functions.
