Students will use a milk carton (their gingerbread house) to find the area and perimeter measurements prior to tiling and decorating during the culminating activity. Students are calculating how much area they will have to decorate their gingerbread houses and use that information to determine and provide an explanation of whether a given amount of candy could fit. The audience is the other classmates, staff, and families/guardians. The task assesses students' skills of being able to measure to the nearest whole inch, and calculate area and perimeter.
MA Standards
3.MD.B.4
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of objects using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Record and show the data by making a line plot (dot plot), where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units—whole numbers, halves, or fourths. (See Glossary for example.)
3.MD.D.8Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
